Firoozeh Dumas writes about her childhood
When Firoozeh Dumas was 7, her 14-year-old
brother was sent to Philadelphia to live with their uncle and his family so
he could go to high school and to college here.
Firoozeh, left behind in Abadan,
Iran, with her parents, was bereft.
But not for long.
"(My sorrow soon faded," she writes,
"not coincidentally, with the receipt of a package from him. Suddenly, having
my brother on a different continent seemed like a small price to pay for owning
a Barbie complete with a carrying case and four outfits, including the rain
gear and mini umbrella."
Her whole family soon followed him
to the United States, this time to Southern California, the land of perpetual
outfits.
Here, she saw everything, changed her name to Julie to make it easier,
changed it back and, when she was completely assimilated, wrote about her life
as it looked to a 7-year-old girl who could not speak the language.
