He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1971 and returned to Chapel Hill to earn a master’s degree in communications in 1974. His broadcasting career begin in 1974, at age 25, when he was hired by ABC as a sideline reporter on its college football broadcasts.
During his 12 years at ABC he hosted Wide World of Sports and served as blow-by-blow announcer for over 40 boxing matches including Mike Tyson vs. Jesse Ferguson in 1986. In March 1988 he began calling boxing action for HBO as blow-by-blow announcer on its World Championship Boxing telecasts and has been at ringside ever since.
