Prolific screenwriter and longtime local resident John Herman Shaner died on Oct. 26 of natural causes at the age of 89.
Shaner enjoyed a decades-long career, working in Hollywood since the mid-1950s on jobs that included acting, writing and producing.
Shaner’s son, Michael, said his father died while taking an evening walk, something he enjoyed each day in the neighborhoods around his Orlando Avenue home, near the West Hollywood border. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Riverside National Cemetery, where he was laid to rest with his beloved wife of 56 years, Madeleine, who died in 2017.
Madeleine Shaner was a longtime drama critic, columnist and copy editor for the Park Labrea News and Beverly Press, and the couple was well-known in Los Angeles theater circles.
